AMP SUPPLY MODEL LA-1000-NT RF AMPLIFIER 160-15

Description

This little amp came from a "silent key." I put it through its paces yesterday. First, this is a no-tune amp with 4 "sweep tubes" for finals. It covers 160 meters through 15. There is no 10 meters. While I have no manual, looking online the amp is rated 1000 watts pep and 700 watts cw INPUT. Since amps like this are about 50-60% efficient, one could expect to see around 400 watts cw output (1300v x .6amp x 60%). The plate voltage is 1500v at rest and about 1200-1300 volts when keyed. In testing, and without "pushing" the amp, I got between 300-400 watts cw output. You'll see 400 watts on my Heathkit meter (not included) on 40 meters. (65 watts drive from the rig) That leads me to believe the tubes are good - perhaps a little soft. Each band had slightly different results. The variable cap for 40 meters arced a little when I first tuned it up but after readjusting the cap, it stopped and seems to work properly. The switch for the meter - voltage/plate current - must be dirty because it doesn't always read plate current when switched - it takes a little "wiggling." That does not affect the operation of the amp.  I was surprised how easy tune-up was - hey, it's a no-tune amp! Don't expect to run big power with an amp like this - it's small, runs on 120v and weighs about 25 pounds. It will, though, make a difference in your signal. Each time you double your power twice, you basically gain an s-unit: 100x2=200x2=

That's one s-unit from your rig's original 100 watts. (If you want to increase another s-unit 400x2=800x2=
1600
watts. . . and that would require a BIG amp!)
This little amp is clean, everything worked when tested. There is one slight little dent in the top right side of the case. Paint is clean and looks great.  There is no 10 meters in it. Read the manual (online) and keep it within suggested parameters. 300-400 watts cw output 500-600 watts pep out is where this amp appears to be most comfortable.
By the way - this amp has tuned input and has qsk - (I did not test qsk) - the amp was tested with my K-3 as the exciter. I did not use an amp interface - simply a direct relay line to the amp.
